Housing for Deaf and Hard of Hearing
Sign language is the first language understood by the deaf community, yet the general population dealing with the deaf community is unaware of, and do not use sign language except for few close contacts and instructors.
Surveys found that most people struggle with finding facilities that are fully accessible to a deaf resident with caregivers that are able to communicate with them. There is no centralized resource for the caregiving profession even though most people prefer to live independently with the assistance of a caregiver.
At the California Room and Board Coalition (CRBC), we believe everyone deserves to live in and be part of the community they call home. For deaf individuals, however, that opportunity is very limited due to the lack of safe and affordable housing options available. We strive to provide access to housing providers offering services that are effective and accessible to our Deaf, Deaf Blind and Hard of hearing clients.
CRBC is committed to building and maintaining an inclusive environment where differences of opinions, beliefs, and values are listened to, respected, and valued. Facilities listed on the site certify the provision of the following services:
- Have a designated person to work with a Deaf Person
- Have an alarm or security alert system
- Have communication access
- Have fire alarm lights
